Osteoporosis is a silent condition — bones become fragile and prone to fracture before any symptoms are noticed. In India, osteoporosis affects an estimated 50 million people, with women over 50 at highest risk. Fragility fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist are the most serious consequences — and hip fractures in the elderly carry significant mortality.
Dr. Chetan M. Dojode FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) UK has extensive NHS experience managing osteoporotic fragility fractures — from emergency hip fracture surgery to outpatient fracture liaison and bone health optimisation. He provides comprehensive osteoporosis assessment and management at both Bengaluru clinics.
Women over 50 — especially post-menopausal
Long-term corticosteroid use (rheumatoid arthritis, asthma)
Low calcium and Vitamin D — extremely common in India
Previous fragility fracture — strongest predictor of next fracture
Family history of hip fracture or osteoporosis
Smoking, excess alcohol, sedentary lifestyle
Osteoporosis means porous bone — reduced bone density and quality leading to increased fracture risk. The most common fragility fractures are hip (most serious), vertebral (spinal crush fractures), and distal radius (wrist). Osteoporosis is diagnosed on DEXA scan with T-score of -2.5 or below.
DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan measures bone mineral density — expressed as a T-score. A T-score of -1 to -2.5 indicates osteopenia (reduced bone density). Below -2.5 is osteoporosis. DEXA is quick, painless, and uses minimal radiation.
Osteoporosis cannot be fully reversed but can be significantly improved. Bisphosphonate therapy (alendronate, zoledronic acid), calcium, Vitamin D, and weight-bearing exercise all increase bone density and reduce fracture risk. Early treatment prevents the most serious complication — hip fracture.
A fragility fracture is a bone break occurring from a force that would not normally break a bone — such as a fall from standing height. Common fragility fractures are hip, wrist (Colles fracture), and spinal vertebral fractures. A previous fragility fracture is the strongest predictor of future fractures.
